History of Internet in Japan (1980s)

In the mid-1980, the Internet was introduced in Japan. The Internet was developed by the computer scientist as an experimental network project among Japan computer scientist to share their computer resources as well as information, knowledge and also ideas. It was called JUNET that linked 3 universities in Tokyo and it was connected with the USENET in the United States. The first scientist that started to use this was a scientist in physics, biology, astronomy or other natural science fields stated by Izumi Aizu (1998).
A researcher at the Tokyo Institute of Technology used modems that he brought back from the United States to connect it to the computers and the 3 universities were the first to launch Japan’s first academic computer network. It happened before the modem was allowed to connect with the mobile phone.
There is a significant event for computer networks in Japan and it was Telecommunications Business Act going into effect. The new act liberalized the telecommunications business, which was a duopoly of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation and the Kokusai Denshin Denwa Company.
Many people hoped that this change would lead to the diversification of telecommunications services. The new law made the way for the use of modems in Japan. However, there was great concern that exchanging emails between organizations might put pressure on postal services.
Another issue was whether it was appropriate to use the Internet Protocol for communications between organizations rather than the Open Systems Interconnection protocol promoted by the Japanese government.
Besides that, there were many experimental academic networks which are similar to Japan’s JUNET were being established. Centring for the most part in the United States, each network utilized its own protocol. Starting from around the end of the 1980s, a movement developed to connect all academic networks.
