How the Internet in Japan Has Evolved
The Internet in Japan
doesn't just come as it is today. The process of becoming one of the countries
with the fastest Internet speed doesn't just take a few years. In fact, it took
Japan almost five decades to achieve such success.
Before the creation of
Internet, a much more expensive and exclusive technology called ARPANET was
used firstly by the United States Department of Defense and later brought into
Japan by researchers at Tokyo Institute of Technology. ARPANET only has a
purpose of sharing computing resources and research material, which makes it a
technology limited to a certain department or organization.
In 1984, the researcher
at Tokyo Institute of Technology would later instigate Japan's first academic
computer network called JUNET (Japan University Network) using the modems from
United States to connect the computers of Tokyo Institute of Technology, Keio
University and University of Tokyo.
Soon after,
telecommunications services begin to rise in popularity as organizations are
starting to engage in exchanging emails using the computer rather than using
postal services.
As the Great
Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake hit Japan in 1995, the social awareness of the
advantages of computer networks and email began to spread among the community.
By this time, exchanging emails over the Internet using online service
providers was already made possible. What's more was that volunteers in Japan
used PC communications to connect with overseas supporters to request for help.
This has led to the
launch of Windows 95 in November 1995 in Japan where the operating system made
it easy for everyone to access the Internet which lead to the increase of
Internet users.
That brings the start of
accessing the Internet through all sorts of medium such as social networking
services, smart phone and etc. This also marks the intense competition for
mobile Internet services in Japan in 1999, where many companies such as Tokyo
Metallic and SoftBank are offering Internet services at a ridiculously cheap
price.
This competition has enabled people from urban areas to gain access to
the Internet. In the year 2000, SoftBank launched its DSL service called
"Yahoo! Broadband'. By 2004, more than half
of Japan's households had Internet access, with a majority of them using
broadband.
